Principles of Computer Engineering

State Machine: Hardware Description Language, Standard symbols for Algorithmic State Machine (ASM) Chart, Realization techniques of Sequential circuits / Logic functions using ASM charts, Top-down design example, Generalized ASM output.

Register Transfer Implementation: Generalized ASM output, ASM chart representation of a control unit, Register Transfer Language (RTL) notation, construction of a data unit from RTL description. Timing of connections and transfers, Sequencing of control, Combinational logic and conditional transfers, Graphical and RTL Bus notation, Timing refinements in RTL systems, Design examples.

Computer Systems Organization: General organization of digital computers, processor organization and classification, Instruction execution, Parallel instruction execution.

Memory Management: Brief review of Bits, Metabits and Secondary memory along with that of I/O devices. Character codes, Error correction codes, Frequency dependent codes. The Microprogramming Level: Instruction sequencing format, its interpretation, hardwired and microprogram control, sequencing of control signals and microinstructions.

Wave Shaping Techniques

Switching Characteristics: Steady state and switching characteristics of diodes and transistors. Use of diodes and transistors as switches.

Clipping and Clamping circuits: Diode and transistor clippers, Emmiter coupled clippers, temperature effect. Diode clamping circuit, Transient waveforms of clamping circuits, Clamping in base current.
